Thumbs down Another sewer overflow into the willamette

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Due to the most recent rainstorm, Portland's sewers have overflowed, leaving officials advising against any recreational activity in the Willamette River during which water could be swallowed.

Officials said Tuesday the public should avoid the river for 48 hours after the rain has stopped.

They say it's especially important to avoid recreational activities such as water skiing or swimming.

Portland is in the 17th year of a 20-year program to improve the city's sewer system. Such advisories are common after heavy rains.

Maybe time to wait a few days to fish the willamette

This really sucks. Like yourself I live real close to the WR, and at almost every park youll see signs saying to avoid contact with water after rain.

My prediction from the very beginning has been that they cannot possibly build a big enough catch basin/big pipe to keep excess from overflowing into the river. Therefore the problem will occur forever.

I thought when they first were talking about fixing it that the plan was to seperate the sewer and street runoff from each other- so that ONLY sewage went to the treatment plant and not ALL the excess water that comes down street drains during rainy periods also. Then when they actually started digging up streets and putting in newer and bigger pipes, it seemed they only wanted to try and catch it all- not seperate it. Project doomed from the beginning IMO if that's actually the case. That's not rain going down our drains- it's OUR money- 100's of MILLIONS of dollars.
