Oregon invasive species

Just watched an episode of Oregon Field guide on OPB dealing with the invasive species already in and/or threatening Oregon (and Washington).
Of main concern to fishermen are the Zebra mussels and Quaga mussels that are now as close as lake Meade on the Colorado river system. They got there from the Great lakes 2000 miles away not long ago and are already impacting the lake badly.
We need to keep them out of the local waters! They'd do millions in damage and possibly ruin some fisheries entirely!

It's not just them either - as fishermen (and women) we all have an obvious love for the outdoors and the environment. I urge you to go to this page and do what you can to help curb the invasion.

Maybe if we all keep vigilant and report invasive species we can stop them or hold them back at least for a while!

I think a lot of people are on board with the same thoughts. Actually I think most people would be, the only thing lacking is education.

I make it a habit to wash my trailer and boat when ever I move from one lake to another, you know those quarter car wash's that cost 2 dollars; small price to pay. I have been doing it for years, I know their is still a chance I could transfer some type of invader but there is only so much one can do. Last year when I went to Canada for a week and took my boat, they didn't care one way or another; the only thing they were concerned about was the lack of a licence plate on my trailer (under 16 feet). I did wash it before and after I used there water system. Crossing into Washington and back into Oregon no one checked anything.....

If the mussels get into the Columbia river system they could cost tax payers and businesses billions. I'm not sure how they'd manage to get up stream, but if they started up stream everything down from there would be in trouble. I think fishermen (and women) and hunters are ideal for keeping watch for invasive plants and critters as by default we're out there and are more likely to be paying attention. I'm very glad that PBS and OPB have stepped forward to do something - being able to report invasives to someone that may be able to do something about them is a great idea!
