I've seen large salamanders a few times that had gills, in ponds that i go to. I was catchin' crawdaddies at nite when i saw them huntin'......................

Many times i see Rough-Skinned Newts all over.............imho .Beloved Children should be told to wash their hands after handling them...cuz they do secrete a poison through the pores of their skin...........some of my large Bullfrogs have died because they tried to swallow a newt..............

Yes I was going to mention something but I didn't want to be gory.. The little orange one are poisonous, sometimes VERY. I was watching a show about deadly animals, and there was a segment about a north California camper that was found dead on his back with his coffee cup in hand. At first they though heart attack, but when they dumped out his coffee pot they found a little orange newt in it. Apparently, it crawled into the pot at night and when he made his coffee the next morning it boiled all the poison out and killed him just as fast as cyanide. Supposedly he took a few sips, fell backwards off his log and died. So, yeah... If I had kids I surely wouldn't let them play with salamanders. It's a neurotoxin so kids really shouldn't play with them at all. Supposedly there is a rule in the rain forest: Bright colors beware!

I used to catch them by the hundreds when I was a kid...I guess I lucked out..

Or maybe that is why I have that strange twitch...

i think probably folks are ok unless you eat them................i would think a young child would be more at risk..........................wash their hands...Don't kiss them...................

My point is that when you are talking about a toxin that is secreted through the skin, by the time the kid is done playing more poison has soaked in through the skin than would be left to wash off. And seeing as it is a neurotoxin, and the children's brains and nervous systems are still developing it's probably best they don't play with them at all. That's just my opinion. Let them play with grasshoppers but not poisonous salamanders.

I Agree...GZ.................the children i see playing with them are by the water & their hands are in the water much of the time..............maybe this helps the children by diluting the poison..............................in the summer i see many young'uns playing with newts.................
