My mother passed away recently , she was 89 and drove a 1962 cadallic ,
( original owner ) . In Arizona it is all you pump gas , and the elderly do not like dealing with it- remember that one day you will not be young - I had friends from high school who would comme over and gas the land boat up for her , the gas station people did not give a shit if she could do it or not - so hooray for Oregon ! If you think that gas prices will drop because there are no more minumum wage employees at the pumps you are very naive . They are going to stick it to us no matter what . After all , some one has to keep those oil execs and all of the vice president's buddies at the oil companies and Halliburton wealthy . Oh well , some things never change , all you can do is fish harder and try try not to think of the idiots in charge . |

Yeah those poor attitude teenagers get old in a hurry. I don't blame them as much as I do the managers of the stations. Obviously no training is given in customer service- simple polite interactions, appreciation for the point of owning a business- to continually grow a customer base and make more money, etc.
About 6 months ago, after always looking for the cheap gas but absolutely DONE with the rude, slow, attitudinal employees- I pulled into a Chevron station on the way to work. I was immediately impressed with the polite and on the ball employees there. Maybe I thought, seeing no teenagers there, this is purely an age thing- next time I'll get a young kid without a clue. Well, the next time I stopped at a different Chevron station and got the same great treatment and windows washed! When I got back to the first station next time- two younger guys were on duty. Surprise!- They were the definition of great employees also. I've since stopped in at other stations when out and about fishing and such- the service seems to be company wide- I have since patronized them at every possible opportunity. Yep- the gas prices still suck big time, but it's nice to not leave a gas station with a bad taste in your mouth every time on top of the ripoff prices. the legal stuff: I do not work for Chevron nor does anyone I know and I don't own any stock either! ![]() |

After we finished college, we (wife & I) moved to CO for a couple of years. At first she hated having to fuel up her own car and would complain constantly about forgetting she had to do it herself until she'd been sitting at the pump for a moment. But she eventually came around. Having lived in OR my whole life, I just thought it was fun and actually liked being allowed to help myself. (much like the self-checkout lines in grocery stores)
We've been back in OR 4 years now and she STILL can't stop complaining about what a hassle it is to not be allowed to just jump out and take care of it yourself. |

They have people go in the the stations to check how the customers are treated every month they are called mystery shoppers. That is why the service is better there.

I like to have them pump my gas. It's sort of a luxury. Many times coming home from a Washington trip, I'll push a little further than normal just to cross the state line so I don't have to get out and do it. Lazy? Maybe.
A few years ago, when I was working at a marine dealer we had a customer come in with his new boat full of gas. Just not full in the gas tank. He went to get gas before going fishing and the attendant put the nozzle into a seat base socket and let her rip. Before anyone new it, he had over 125 gallons of gas in the bilge. Major foul up. I had to strip all the accessories off the boat so it could go back to the factory for new floorboards, vinyl, carpet, and other things. That guy wasn't pumping gas there anymore. |

I fill my own delivery vehicle at a commercial fueling station, but I can't fill my car at a regular station. Sometimes I feel like I sit there for ever while I wait for the minimum wage employee to remove the pump. I am all for creating and keeping jobs, but they should at least have one self serve lane.

We on the west coast pay a premium for gasoline thanks to our stricter standards. As far as I know, OR and CA, maybe WA require a minimum 87 octane for "Regular". When I was in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming a couple years ago their "regular" was an 85 octane, making our reg. comparable to their mid range option. Food for thought.
