My steelhead ddiction started very slow in the mid 80's when my uncle took me to the river. I never landed one. One day when I wad maybe 10 I hooked into one it went airborn and I lost it. Didn't go for steelhead again till 1990 when driving by the creek and saw a bunch of cars parked so I stopped and walked down. Saw a few moving and asked a guy what to use to catch them, he said mepps spinners. I had a 7' ml Berkley spinning rod in my car and my bluegill box. I figured I had a white rooster tail and that's close to a mepps. Well I casted in for about 10 minutes when this silver monster followed my lure almost to me feet. It didn't take the lure but thatdidnt matter I was hooked. I went to Wal-Mart that night and picked up every color mepps I could find. I stopped the next morning and started casting, 10 minutes and I had one on. The fish went airborn and then turned into a torpedo and ripped off 60 or 70 yardsand wrapped into a brush pile. Ok lost a lure and needed to respool. Came back a few hours later and a guy was there with a crazy long pole and I thought to myself why would he have that huge pole in this small creek. Well I figured it out about 5 minutes later. He hooked one and it took about 5 minutes and he landed the fish. Ok I've got to figure out what he's doing that I'm not. I must've talked to him for 2 hours about what u needed to get. I went the next day to gander mountain, old the sales guy I wanted a 9' light action rod. He walked over and says his just came on today. A st. Croix wild river 9' lite moderate. Ok I'll take it and a shimano Sedona. That was 1990 and I've never stopped hunting these fish. I'm so addicts that once July hits I take 3 days off work every week till November.
