Simple Green Stonefly, no rib, no hackle. Just a nice profile meant to tumble through turbulence like the real ones do.

went down to my spot looking for some top water action last week, saw folks still nymphin' and learned 'the bigger fish don't take drys'. . . . bad for me as I leave all my nymph gear at home this time of year, I gave it a shot anyway.

Every year the bugs come out earlier...... ODFW unnaturally warming the river to let the lake smolt out has nothing to do with that..... any ways, earlier (depending on weather and water temps) seems to get the hogs in close and looking up and I'll be there the week before Mem. day...
I'm in, and was thinking about an "in person" swap.
Memorial Day is monday may 26th, the week before that (mon-fri) is what I was thinking about.

first Q: Not really, air temp is gonna flash freeze your line (physics) its just a fact. You have the right idea with the 'dip' but, when it's freezing out, it's freezing out.

Id recommend you try some gear out hands on either go out with someone who will let you use their gear for a few casts or drop the duckets on a guide for a day everyone has different preferences on brands and as long as you don't go cheap most will work fine for you get on the water...
