    Favorite winter steelhead flies

How are those worms tied? They look like they'd move well in the water.

What type of fishing line would you buy for fly fishing leader?

As long as you can tie strong knots, there's really no wrong way to do it. Nearly every fly line or sink tip I've ever purchased comes with a loop on the end so I tie a loop in the end of my leader and attach it that way. If I'm swinging flies for steelhead I'm not attaching any additional...

What type of fishing line would you buy for fly fishing leader?

Maxima UG is what I use. In regards to the floating swivel biz, use a blood knot, back-to-back nail knots, or a loop to loop connection.

    Fish n chips

The Horse Brass Pub, SE 46th and Belmont. Great beer selection and great fish and chips. The half order is more than enough for me.

    Jetty help

I've had a lot of success with the fly rod off the jetty. My setup is 10wt 30 ft type VI scientific anglers shooting taper to get down intermediate running line stripping basket damn near any fly you can think of, these fish are not selective The 10 wt might sound like overkill but it makes...

Fly rod flex/action - which one?

It depends on the kind of fishing I'm doing. I suppose if I was only fishing in perfect conditions I'd always gravitate towards a medium action rod but that's just not the case. For fishing the jetties I like a fast rod to deal with the wind but fishing dries for trout I use a Redington CT...

Moving to Hillsboro, not familiar with the area.

The trout fishing in the rivers nearest Hillsboro isn't great but I still enjoy fishing the Wilson River for cutthroat, especially in the late summer/early fall. There are a lot of smolt in the river so I'd encourage methods that limit mortality and if you're catching a bunch of small fish to...

    Is this the end?

It seems it just fluctuates from year to year. Sure, things will never return to how it was prior to all the damage we've inflicted on the watersheds, but last year seemed to be a reasonable year for coastal steelhead and this isn't the first time the runs have sucked.

    Color or chrome?

They're all great, but like Brad said, if I'm looking to eat I prefer a bright fish.

Broke down and bought a switch rod.

Are you nymphing or swinging (or both)? Here are some youtube clips that I've found helpful in getting me started spey casting. One of the pieces of advice I got that really helped was too be sure and let your bottom hand generate a lot of the power. I find that when I'm doing it right it's...

seems a little late for Coho.

I went out there last weds and there were a fair amount of people considering it was mid week. landed a cutthroat and lost what I'm assuming was a steelhead after having it on for 15 seconds or so.
