Trying to catch my first winter steelhead

if i had to do it over again, i would have bought the cheapest steelhead rod in the store for my first setup. i broke the first two or three steelhead rods i owned. it took a while before i figured out how to properly hike through wooded areas with them let alone fish them :) put more money into...

its still early in the season. dont burn yourself out before the fish show up in better numbers. im guilty of doing that, having been out for 5 long trips since xmas with nothing to show

    Little help with plugging

As others have mentioned, it depends on lots of details and variables. If I had to guess, tho, I'd say you were fishing water that is too slow and/or your plug is too small for the water you're fishing.

    Sandy and Clack?

also floated from oxbow to dabney on sun. water looked great, albeit a bit higher and faster than i prefer. no fish for us and didn't see any for the handful of civilian and guide boats around us through the day.

Personal float Clackamas or other local water

Also, be aware that at this time of year, the river will fill up with jet sleds at levels over 12.5-13ft. Be visible and get out of the way if you hear one tearin up the river from the other side of that bend.

Any tips for a first time steelhead angler?

you forgot the part about draining all the gas from your rig into the sewer and flushing all the cash in your wallet down the toilet!

    North Santiam

the low and warm water really hit the valley rivers hard this summer, the santiams specifically. that coupled with the virtually non-existent summer steelhead returns this year has made fishing there a waste of time for non-locals like me, but if you live on the river you've got nothing to lose...

    Miami River chums!

sounds like a blast. im curious, whats the public bank access like on the miami? i always heard it was very limited so i never bothered to check it out. wife is going to kill me if i bring home any more salmon so C&R chum sounds like a fun alternative to chasin kings with the rest of the crowd.

    Rigging a spinner

Whats the idea behind the mono buffer? Is it to reduce the visibility that hiviz braid would have? I've only ever tied directly to mainline braid. I've caught fish but wonder if the mono buffer would improve? As I understood it, a fish that hits a spinner is hitting out of aggression and...

    Favorite summer set up

do beads work well for summers? i got into them this year for winters, drifting them from the bank bobberdog style under a float, got some big fish on small beads. i wonder how summers would react to them.

Slow day on Nestucca and Trask.

I hit a what should be a nice chinook hole on the trask on sunday but it was too low--could see the bottom and noticed there were no fish in it! seemed the only place fishable on the trask was the hatchery, but there wasn't a parking spot available. Curious what the pressure is like on the...
