Default New to fishing this state

Hey everybody,

My name is Joe I moved here in august of 07 and I have only caught two fish in this state since moving here. (small rainbows at Hebo) Anyways, I have been fishing Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico since I was knee high to a chicken. Mostly Redfish, snook, and speckled trout. (I am a flats man). I am looking forward to learning more about fishing freshwater and getting some scoop on some good spots. Any help is appreciated. I miss catching fish!

Thanks,
Joe D.

I wouldn't give up on the salty flats, I believe they're vastly underused and overlooked. You can find sturgeon, surf perch, the occasional california halibut, and a whole variety of other flat fish. Then along the jetties you'll get greenling, black rockfish, and lingcod.

You mentioned Hebo, so I assume you are somewhere near the north coast? The trout season for rivers doesn't open for over a month still but all the salmon/steelhead streams will also produce nice cutthroat trout all summer long, and searun cutthroats in the late summer up until the season closes. As for what rivers to target precisely, well they are all good, and most receive a generous amount of hatchery salmon/steelhead, so look at the Wilson, Trask, Miami, Kilches, Nehalem, Nestucca, and well many many others.

Good luck and I look forward to your reports.

It's hard to compare Oregon to Florida (Fishing Capital of the World.) For that matter compare the ODFW website to the myfwc.com.

I'm trying to convince my wife that a Florida move is in our future. Until then it's a vacation or two every year.

I know what you are talking about Cav. I have not yet caught a steelhead or salmon in Oregon, but I love the pulling finning reds out the Florida mangroves. Thanks for the advice on Cullaby, I wish I did have a boat. If you are ever going to hit the Tampa/Saint petersubrg area of Florida shoot me a message and Ill give you a couple of sure fire spots.

Google Maps

FloridaJoe I spent 3 or 4 months in Bradenton plunking around Fisherman's Cove when I was 16 and almost stayed. My uncle claimed he could get me a job at the bait shop he went to, and it was haaarrrrdddd to say no. He used to win the shark tournies when he lived there. Mick Gast?
