Thumbs up Welcome to the forum

Combat Chuck...now there has to be a story in that name. Welcome to OFF, I don't get up to your area very often so I can't recommend any place except the Santiam River. I fish below the dam each spring for Steelhead. Do you have a boat ? There is some decent bank angling at Foster and Greenpeter res., there are quite a few members up in your neck of the woods. Maybe some of them will share some spots with you. Again welcome to OFF.

So you fish the Calapooia? I had never been up there until the last day of trout season this last year. It actually kind of worried me when I was up there because there was basically no life; no bugs, no snails, no crayfish, and most importantly no trout.

I tried started at McKercher Park, all the way well into Weyerhauser land, do you really catch fish up there?

As for other places to fish, I strongly recommend the Alsea for trout. The south fork can be a lot of fun if you are looking for a remote wilderness experience. Fern Ridge down by Eugene seems to be full of decent bass. And Green Peter out by Sweethome is full of good sized trout, chinook, and kokanee.

My first attachment is from my trip to the Calapooia, and the second attachment is my secret hole on the SF Alsea.

Yes i caught many on the calapooia last summer. I went to mckercher once and got a couple but where I liked was up above Holly. I think i was 5+ miles from the start of "Upper calapooia drive" (i think thats the name). I went something like 8 times last summer and fished the last 2 hours of light. The fish are not big but i averaged about 15 a night which was a lot of fun especially since i need lots of work on my fly fishing. The biggest i caught was 11" and average was 5" or 6". GREAT STRESS RELIEF!

Yeah most of my time was up above Holley, it sure was beautiful up there. The water was low and crystal clear, and just sad to see it completely devoid of life. Well I guess they're there somewhere, just well hidden from me!

I just saw a show on that very thing, a stream completely void of life and how they brought it back to life. They planted Salmon carcases donated by Fish & Game in the upper reaches of the stream and as the fish decomposed it fed the micro organism and so on throughout the chain and within a few seasons the river bed came back to life and the higher life forms followed. Now they have a very productive body of water, it starts in the very basics. I will see if I can get the information provided at the end of the show.
It would be cool to get in on something like that, who knows where it might go.

I used to go up there, but haven't been for some time. Last time I was up there you could still use bait. I used to catch some nice cutthroats on salmon eggs.
