What kind of kokanee in GR

I have heard several people say that the Kokanee in GP are Sockeye. I was raised in Alaska and caught many a Sockeye. These fish don't even look like them. # 1 Sockeye salmon don't have spots on them. The fish in GP look more like a Coho with spots on the back and in the tail. The Chinook have a more pointed head and black mouth with spots. I did get this from Oregon Fish and Wildlife it is very interesting. But they don't say what kind of Kokanee that are planted in GR.

Kokanee and sockeye are one in the same. Kokes just don't make it to the salt.

The below description is of a true Sockeye salmon. When you look up Kokanee it shows black spots on its back where a Sockeye does not. The fish that I have caught in GP have spots on there back. So do some of the Kokanee (Sockeye) get these spots from being land locked?

No prominent spots on back or tail (small speckles may be present). Mouth is white with a white gum line and dark tongue. Average size scales. Prominent gold colored eye.
No silver pigment on the tail.

    Small teeth

Many species change color patterns to a degree when entering the ocean. They do it to better camoflauge themselves. They probably have spots in freshwater to create the illusion of rocks or shadows on stream or lake beds. Much the same way a Steelhead turns more chrome and loses some of there color when they've been in the ocean. Salmon do the same thing too I guess.

From what I understand ODFW has been planting Chinook in GP for several years now. For my dad and I the Kokanee fishing has gone downhill and the little 10 - 11" Chinook you catch are a nuisance. I don't understand the logic behind planting Chinook in GP as it seems to be ruining a great Kokanee fishery.

I couldn't agree with you more on them planting Chinook in GP. All tho it was good fishing at GP this year but it was late. The fish are a lot bigger in the last few years. I can remember when you caught a 12'' Kokanee it was a big fish, now we are catching them 17''. Out of all the Kokanee that I caught I only caught about six Chinook. But still it isn't like four or five years ago. You would have thought ODFW would have wised up when they ruined the kokanee fishing in Detroit with the Chinook.
