Today I finally bought my fishing licence and went to the Junction City Pond.
The temperature was 51 and the day was sunny. Unfortunately the sun disappeared as soon as I got to the pond. And in addition an unpleasant wind appeared. ![]() I spent a couple hours fishing with PowerBait (both with bobber and without). Not a single bite. But from time to time I could see here and there people landing fish. After I saw several big splashes not far from me I decided to try a lure. And about 5 minutes later... Hit. Jerk. Jump. Another jump. Gee, it was a big fish! A monster! A big jumping monster! The guy who was fishing next to me saw me fighting. So he grabbed his net and rushed to help me. He was already next to me and was getting ready to use his net when... F**K! I don't know what happened. I didn't pull too hard, I didn't let the line lose. But the fish was gone. And my lure too. Of course I tied another one and was casting and casting, but... I had my window and I blew it. ![]() |

Sorry for the lost fish, but a least you got out and had a hog on. I all ways seems like the ones that get away are the biggest fish of the day.
I know that is how it is with me.....What kind of lure did the fish take ?Chuck

It was bright pink Ruster tale with a silver blade. 16 I think. That's funny, because I spoted this lure hanging on a bush. I had my waiders on so I got into the water, got the lure, and hooked the fish on it. If I would land the fish it would be totally a "christmas" story

It is still a great story, just not the ending you hoped for....

) bright pink and orange. And back to the pond. ![]() The weather was the same - 51, overcast, windy. And today I got even more disappointed than yesterday. After casting and casting and casting without any result I made a silly cast - the lure got in the water but the line got caught on a bush branch. So I tried to get the line off of the bush when I felt the fish on my line. And it's funny because I wasn't reeling at all. The lure was probably just laying on the bottom. Fish is pulling, I'm thinking what to do. Finally I decided to reel in - what else could I do? Of course I didn't have a single chance to land that fish. Bye - bye another fish, bye - bye another lure. But I learned a lesson - the lure should be almost on the bottom and I should move it veeeery sloooow. That's what I was trying to do. And I snagged the bottom. I was doing the same with the other lure and in about 20 - 30 minutes I felt that I snagged the bottom again so I jerked trying to release the lure and the line started go through the drag (not sure how you call it). But what a pleasant sound! This fish didn't jump, I didn't feel jerks or vibrations. Just powerful steady pull. I was saying to myself: "do not panic, keep the line tight but don't pull hard". But the fish got away AGAIN! It didn't brake the line. It just got off of the hook. ![]() Should I have jerked again when the fish was pulling the line? Will it set the hook better or rip the fishes lip? Hope tomorrow the weather will remain the same so fish will keep biting pink Rooster tails. And maybe I'll learn how to land something that I hooked. ![]() |

Great story, whether you should have set the hook on that fish is hard to say, but you got the retrieve right - deep and slow. Welcome to the art of lure fishing, buy two lose one....it is just the way of the art. Once I got into the spinner and spoon fishing I decided that they were to costly to keep buying them. I make my own now, the initial cost was a bit but the per lure cost is pennies on the dollar. I can make a spinner for about 35 cents now, as apposed to 2 or 3 dollars at bi-mart.
Back to your fish that got away, sometimes the fish only gets on hook in the flesh and even them it can work it's way out just as your bringing the fish in. Thats why they call it fishing instead of catching . Tight lines to you ......Chuck
