To start off with the glass is tempered and I have yet to even chip one on a rock or other obstructions let alone break one. As far as the fish being injured, how many lures or hooks have you lost in a fish ? Soft plastic baits never decompose and yet we all use them. The weights we all use are primarily made from lead, which we all know are toxic but we use them anyway. If a fish is going to take a lure or break one off during a fight then thats the way it goes. Personally I use them on a regular basis and they produce very nice fish on a daily basis.

What do you mean worth it ? I can atest that they work on catching fish.

Chuck

I have asked a couple of local glass art shops around Portland what the cost would be to produce a few nice dichro lures, and they said it would be very expensive for basically less than 50 or so, but if I wanted 70 or 100, they said the price would drop substantially. That is all I was alluding to...And I suppose even if I did pay the 20-30 bucks each for a few lures that I know for a fact catch fish it is cheaper than most guides right?

Luckily I made most of the lures, the glass was free and the other were experimental prototypes so they were free. If it was a twenty dollar lure...I am not sure I would bite myself. They do work but so do $3.50 Kastmaters and Lil Cleo's... I seem to use the Dicroic Lures when fishing deep; using the downrigger. Tight lines.

I imagine it would be substantially cheaper to make them yourself rather than have a glass shop do it for you. I know OSU has classes and a craft center membership where you can do just that. I assume that there have to be private shops set up in a similar fashion.

Troutski - I know what you mean about lil cleos and other comercially available products. They have a proven record, and are cheap.(comparativly) Some of your lures just look so gorgeous, that i can't imagine them not being productive. I have found some summer classes at the NW college of Art where i can hopefully learn a little more about shaping molten sand... Thanks also for the downrigger info very good to know.

Those spoonish lures are sure mighty looking. One interesting fact I found that originally, spoons were actually spoons with hooks... They were used for lake trout mostly, I was thinking of taking a soldering iron and melting the round side off. You could melt some holes, paint some dots or something. that would be great for a really cheap price.

Oh it will Chuck. My dads friend ended up putting 3 simple designs and shapes together on his home torch, that we are all planning on using sometime next weekend. Hopefully at Green Peter for a little derby teaser.
When we get the lures I'll post pictures. I'm going to need the criticisim, because we have never tried doing this before.
