Post Semi Spring Day...

Took Bottom Bob to Hills Creek this morning at sunrise....got to break my new gortex in big time, worked perfect. The water temp was 40 at the ramp and 38 in the back, at one time in the slack water near the back the temp got up to 42 and a major hatch of MayFlies began around 10:30am - fish rising every where. A lure anglers dream......we did very well indeed. Three species of fish in the net....great day on the water with a very good friend. Had a very nice treat in the early morning, a very rare fish...a Bull Trout. These fish are on the endangered Species and must be protected at all cost, its not something you target but they are Trout and have the same feeding patterns as other Trout, one should never target them but sometimes it can't be helped. The point I am trying to make is if you ever do catch one they look a lot like a Brook Trout but with some unique traits, one very large difference is the back of the fish, a Brook Trout has a paisley type pattern on their back, very distinct. A Bull Trout has spots, keep a synopsis handy and there are pictures showing the differences. Try to keep the fish calm and remove the hook as quickly as possible, net it if possible and do not handle it with your hands. Get a picture while the fish is in the net and then release it with a smile on your face...you just won the angling lottery.
We had a great day on the water, between the two of us we caught over twenty five fish each, and released all with out incident (no floaters). Two Bald Eagles and a pair of River Otters, even got about an hour of sunshine. Spring time is coming...oh yea its coming....Here are a couple of pictures hope you enjoy them. The first fish picture is of the Bull Trout, tight lines and be well.

Chuck

Those are some beautiful looking fish. Gotta love being on the water for those hatches. So that is what a bull trout looks like. Congrats on that one. Thanks for the story and the nice pics.

Those were some really awesome rainbows, they sure put most of the ones from Green Peter to shame, and as for the Bull trout I hear their numbers are coming back up all across the state. Hopefully they'll be even less rare in the coming years.

Oh and you said you caught three species, what was the third?

Great pics guys, good job on the Bull Trout!

I'm gonna have to head south this year, never been to Dexter or Hills Creek.
