I would like to see more bank/wader fishing for steelhead and Salmon that isn't fly fishing. Hard to find shows that feature bank angling tactics that are not fly fishing. I have seen a few Hog Quest filmed from the shore and they were quite entertaining.Under water video of what dif tackle looks like in action and maybe how fish react to it. Also I would like to see a variety of rigs tied up for different clarity/weather/levels for different species. Lure/gear Storage tips, wader/boot info, some instinctual info on migratory salminoids. A show on NW Bass fishing would be pretty cool too! I don't mind the product push if it is casually mentioned. So educational fish porn is my vote! I love fishing shows!

I'm all about the fish porn! Education is great too as I like to see the various riggings, and as well as anything dealing with structure and fish habits.
The only problem I have with product ads is for shows which spend more time on commercial than on the show. Other than that product placement in the show doesn't bother me in the least so long as it isn't obtrusive. At this point in my life destination info is the least important, but at some point I may want to take a trip to Alaska, Canada, Mexico, or somewhere else and fish. At which point I just might jot down the lodge and guide a show was using. Otherwise my mind filters it out just like the product ads. |

Most of the shows I see are either bass fishing (those got old when I was 12) and saltwater big game charter fishing that 95% of the people watching could never afford, then salmon fishing in Alaska (which still we can't afford), then trout fishing.
The shows that really get me interested are ones where the host goes some place typical and tries to catch an odd species, or tries to catch something normal using some new method. The other day some nut was fly fishing for Maico sharks (WOW), there was a Redfish tourny in Florida, a couple friends were casting live bait next to this one residential dock and were pulling up Muskie three or four feet long all day. I would like to see some saltwater kayak fishing, some west cost surf and jetty fishing, some east coast salmon fishing, shad fishing on the Umpqua, smallmouth fishing in rivers like the John Day or Willamette.. There are so many opportunities on the west coast for these shows but it's always either Florida, Alaska, or bass fishing in the south. Yawn....

I would like to see more educational information. Destinations in the pacific northwest would be great too. There are so many shows from the eastern states, but so few here. I get bored watching the fish porn (even though it is funny to watch these guys "acting" all excited... the acting is usually pretty bad! Can't they find some real people to put in those boats?). I would be more interested in rigging, setting the hook, finding the fish, etc. And could someone please explain downriggers, planers and all the other trolling gear? I don't mind the ads either as long as it varies. Seeing the same guy talking about the same thing week after week is not worth my time.
And hey, in BC and Alaska there are girls on the fishing shows. Heck, they even host the show in BC. A few gals fishing here and there wouldn't be a bad thing. It drives me nuts when the show has the girls going off to the spa while they guys go off fishing. Not fair! |

You wanna talk divers... I have a buddy that uses a technique that I'm really not sure is original or not but drives steelhead and salmon nuts. What he does is gets a deep diving crankbait and takes off all the hooks. Ties about a four or five foot leader off the back and then ties on a cured whole shrimp. Two people in the boat, one line 80 feet out and the other 90 or 100 then rows against the current and dives them into tail outs and holes moving side to side across the river. He just destroys fish. Fun stuff.
