Default Steelhead fly fishing help

Hi all,
I have been fly fishing for about ten years now (mostly for trout) and I am trying to learn fly fishing for steelhead. I got an 8 weight rod this summer and have been out fishing with it several times. I haven't caught a fish on it yet and I always have the feeling that I'm just not doing something right. One of my biggest issues, I think is not knowing what fly to choose for any given set of conditions. Its not like Trout fishing where you can tell what to use based on the insects and small fish that are present. Also locating good holding water and figuring out the best way to fish it. It would be great if one of you guys would be willing to go fishing with me so I can learn directly from someone rather than reading about it (witch I have done). I would do the driving or at least pay for gas. I live in Portland but would be willing to drive a cuopel hours to what ever river you want.

Thanks for the help,
Nate

Hi Nate, I don't do fly fishing (yet) but my husband just got a set up at River City Flyshop in Tigard off of Scholls Ferry rd, not far from 217. Anyway, they were sure nice and very helpful. If you're ever in the area I'm sure they would give you all kinds of tips .

Yea I'll check it out next time I'm over in that part of town. I guess mostly I'm just looking for someone to go fishing with to compare notes with and make sure I'm doing the right thing. Sense I haven't caught a steelhead on a fly yet I find my self second guessing what I do.

I fly fish but not for steelhead. But i spinner fish for steels and if you want to go to the Wilson or trask this winter and need someone to fish with send me a PM. I have read quite a bit on fly fishing for steels and may be able to give a few pointers while on the river.

Yea I definitely will be going to the Wilson this winter so I'll send you a PM then. I was actually at the Wilson yesterday fishing for chinook (drift/spinner fishing). The river still needs more water. I also went to the Kilchis and I got a couple chum and lost a few others. All in all a good day.
