Default Record Sturgeon?

While I was tying in another thread a few minutes ago, this email came from a friends of mine. Is there any merit to this email? Is this true and does anyone know anything about it?

This Sturgeon was caught on the Willamette River just below Oregon City two weeks ago. It weighed out at over 1,000 lbs and measured out at 11'1". It was 56" around the girth and took over 6 and a half hours, and 4 dozen beers, for the 4 guys taking turns at the reeling it in.

Any Sturgeon OVER about five feet has to be released unharmed and cannot be removed from the water. They are brood / breeding stock and probably older than most of us.

This Sturgeon is Still alive, just worn out from the fight. They turned him loose after the photo.

Nope no truth to it being from either the Columbia or Willamette, it's actually from the Fraser river in Canada I believe, Giant Fraser River Sturgeon Photograph

Of course I do believe there are sturgeon that big (or bigger) in our rivers as well. They're just not caught very often.

Oh and while we're on fish stories, don't fall for this one either...

Default Columbia

They can get very large on the Columbia, and one could imagine that there are some that large. Historically speaking at the turn of the century or so many reports from commercial fisherman confirmed huge sturgeon on the Columbia. I have seen a photo with a native american standing next to a sturgeon that was the size of the one in the photo. It said that it was over 1000 lbs. 1920 or so. The photo was on display at a seafood place in SW portland.

Last year A friend of mine was fishing near Hood River and with homemade habanero pickled squid and hooked a large sturgeon that they fought for over 4 hours with 2 people. The fish towed the boat about 2 miles from where it was hooked. My friend says they got the fish near the side of the 16 ft boat, and He said it was almost as long as the boat. I can imagine it was 9 feet or so. He also said he was done fishing for oversized sturgeon because he was so sore in the shoulders and neck and back that he almost couldn't go to work. "better than any weight workout he had had in a long time" he said. I bet.

this pic floats around alot, it always changes which river they were supposed to have caught it in.

My hardest battle with a sturgeon was in 07, when we accidentally hooked one down near the tail while trolling spinners at B-10. You think oversize are tough when you can get them to face towards you? Try it when they are facing the other way sometime (don't really), and on salmon #15-40's.
we fought it for almost 2 hours, Tired 3 guys out. our arms still burned hours later at dinner. never saw the whole fish but we got it near surface twice and it's tail was huge.

I mainly meant that like the sturgeon story when it's retold here, the shark was caught somewhere near here (and is usually retold as being a Great White). And just like the sturgeon story it wasn't!
