Default Gear questions???

Im looking to invest in a rod for salmon ,small stergin, flounder,Big Cat fish down south and in the snake, and some surf fishings from jetties and stuff.

I think i found what i want for a desent prise.

A 12 foot ugly stick big water rod 15-50lb test rated.
a Okuma covector reel 410yards of 50 pound test 4.0:1 Gear ratio.

Would this work for thows speices?

Can you cast a big reel like that easly or very far?

For the species on that list i would use correctly sized leaders not the 50 pound to fish.

I don't have a whole lot of experience with Sturgeon (read as none) and the same with catfish (big or otherwise) but for Chinooks and surf casting I think you're OK with what you have listed. You really don't need a heavy pole for jetty fishing - I use my steelhead rig with 10-12lb line and have done just fine and have never yet wished I'd had something bigger and/or with heavier line.
IS the realy you list a spinning or casting type (level wind)? Ever since my first try with a level wind a LONG time ago that constantly resulted in my getting birds nests and no fish I've avoided them. That being said though, I hear the new ones have "anti nest" features and may well be better for long casts like those you'd probably want for bank fishing for sturgeon and for surf casting.

That's my experience with them too. Great for birds, one cast = nest! I'd have to borrow one or something and like it to ever buy one. I may not cast as far with my spinning reels but I do spend time fishing not swearing (well, a little swearing goes with any fishing, but ya know what I mean).

I can't say there's anything fundamentally wrong with the Okuma Convector reels, but all the same I wouldn't recommend that as your first bait caster. Especially if you plan to try casting at all, seeing as they lack any sort of cast control/braking. So unless you are already an experienced user of bait casters I would advise looking for a design that has some sort of cast control, whether it's centrifugal or magnetic.

Can anyone recomend a baitcaster or spinning reel that could be used for big salmon for under 100 bucks.

I can't recommend a specific brand, but Sportsmans' Warehouse is having a great sale on rod/reel combos right now- you can even put the combo together yourself and still get the sale price.
