Waiting and planning makes it more fun in the long run...be patient, and enjoy what you have until then.

Well fortunately you don't need expensive gear. If you are on a budget I would say one of the best combos you can probably pick up would be the Abu Garcia Cardinal 304 combo I've seen at Joes, last I saw they were $39.99 for a Cardinal 304 (very nice reel) and an 8'6" medium action rod. They also usually have Mitchel combos as well that are pretty much identical to the Abu ones. I purchased one in the late spring and I've been very happy with my purchase since.

And by the way the Okuma Convector that holds 410yds of 50# test (CV55W) is probably major overkill for salmon, that's entering large sturgeon or halibut territory. I have a CV20DLX and that would be plenty adequate, while I can only imagine that the 55 series would be down right cumbersome for casting even if it was equipped with cast control.

I got a Shakspear agility baitcaster from Fisherman's Marine for 20 bucks. It works great and cast pretty far. My uncle showed me a trick for losing the birdnest tendancy. Put as much wieght on the reel as your line and rod allow, I tighten my cast control and magnetic resistance all the way up and cast till you got it down pat. Then progresivly loosen the cast control and mag resistance as you get used to it. I still get a little backlash, but the birdnest are down big time! Onch you don't have to spend a ton, I also saw some decent baitcasters at Wal mart for 30-50 bucks. If you ever get to SE Portland there is a store called Ollie Damons 236 SE Grand Ave.
Portland, OR 97214. They have Salmon Steelie setups for really nice prices as well. They also repair rods and reels for any of you guys with broken equipment that need fixin annnnd they are the only place that carries bait in downtown or inner SE. real friendly too.

When I purchased my Shimano Symetre 4000FI spinning reel, I was told it was good for salmon. Do you have to have a baitcaster to go after salmon, or will one of the larger spinning reels work as well?

I see no reason one would need a bait caster in place of a spinning reel.

Default reel for oncorhynchus

for years I have been using the Abu- Garcia 5600 - 6000 series - level wind
they run about 80.00 $ - you can not beat them - I have caught a lot salmon and steelies on them - as far as birds nests go , it is all about practice , and knowing how to adjust the brake ( the knob on the side )
spinning reals are ok , but I would not want to hook a big nook on one of them - lets talk about money - Garcia 80$ , I picked up a Lamaglass 8' 6"
salmon rod - graphite - for 85$ at BiMart -- that week I landed a 30lb. nook with it - some guys may not agree with me but in the great northwest you must learn how to use a level wind , there a ton of reasons why -

I always use 50lb. green Tuff Line - it has the diameter of 10 lb. mono -
however do not use it for leader , you will never get it back -
