I moved to taulatin a few months ago and the cedaroak boat ramp is less then 10 miles from my place now. I lived in newberg for 8 years just 3 miles from the boat ramp were I fished and caught tons of smallmouths and know the river there really will but i'm starting over down below the falls. I would like to try some shad fishing aroud clackamas mouth area. I have a 16' starcraft with a 50 merc., elec. bass motor, river ancor system, and brand new lowrance sonar/gps unit to fish with. I'm experienced in river ancoring i fish the CR for sturgen. I have tons of questions I'll just ask the shad related ones here. What size Dick Nite #0 (wee), or #1, what depth of water, and how far behind the boat is best.

Good to meet you Alex. Good times for sure.

I sure enjoyed watching you learn a new technique and get the hang of it and then start hooking some very nice fish on your own.

We put in at Clackamette after work at about 6:00 and fished for 2 hours with consistant action. Wee dick nite flicker lure in red and pearl was the ticket with 4oz lead on a 2 foot dropper. I also hooked a couple on a shad killer just so Alex could see that it worked.

I forgot to put a bucket in the boat to put fish in, so I had to hose out the back end when I got home. Shad sure are stinky and slimey.

We both now have fresh bait for sturgeon and crabs. I kept a couple of small male shad to use for Halibut bait tomorrow and Friday.

Peace, Tom

Yesterday, (tuesday, the 24) I caught 3 shad... Not many. I got many bites, but they kept on spitting. I got to bradfort island at 7:10 and started casting out florecent green aerojigs with a 6" hollow lead dropper, that was 3/16 inches thick. My dad hooked the first one. He got it in. I got the second, then the third. I hooked the fourth, reeled it in, my dad got the net and got it in, he got the shad in his hands that were in the net. He took the hook out, then dropped the net... Then the fish flew away... Then I hooked the fifth, I reeled it in, dad was coming too, he was too late and the fish tore me off. I kept getting bites. I tried fishing with chartruese glo yarn, nothing. I don't know how to rig the yarn. So we went home with 3 big, yummiful shad. The taste is worth the bones! They are awesome!!! All you need to do is put a lil bit of olive oil on the pan(just enough to cover the bottom of it) then add some spring onions, onions, lil bits of celery maybe, some sugar, then soy sauce! It tasted sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good. The meat from the lateral lines was the best. The lateral lines are in the middle of the fish's side. It is dark meat.

I just got back from going out today... Me and my girlfriend went after southside showed me the ropes. We hooked about 23 but came home with 10.

Yeah... Shadding season is just about done, less than 60000 on 6/25 I think. On the fish count website, there was a dash where the actual number should be. I think that means the season's over. The shad aren't biting well either anymore, the sun's high at 6:30 and the water's very low. I only got 5 bites in 2 and a half hours. Shad hate sunlight, so the sun's gonna get brighter as time goes.

Where were you? The shad are done going up the dam. I wonder if they are just passed the dam, so there's not many there. They might be in the Clack spawning or something, then I think the numbers at the dam will go back up as they go down. Hmmmmmm...

I came back yesterday at noon. Fishing was hot man! Even though the fish count was 26000 only, i hooked 15, lost 9! I didn't fish the same spot. I fished on the very steep and big rocks right next to the dam, except not right next to it. I used pink aero jigs this time cause green ones weren't in stock. At first, I went to the same spot, only 1 other person there. Nobody caught anything. Then we decided to try robins island, on the way there, I saw people fishing on the stretch of water right next to the dam. We got off, casted the same pink jig heads. I couldn't catch anything in morning with pink, the person next to me was catching loads! He was using a green, so I asked for one, he gave me ONE and that gave me my first two fish, before the third ripped the knot. I tied another pink one on, and boy! The sun was shining now, over the haze from the california wild fires. I casted, and WHAM! Fish on! I lost all my 8 jigheads cause them fish are strong, when I ran out, I had to improvise... I had some crappy crappie jigs that were just a jig head with hair running down the side of the hook and tail hairs. I took one, cut the hair off the end, so it looked like a shrimp. I casted once, WHAM! First cast, hooked one, got it in, second cast, hooked another! It broke me off too. I did the same with a pink jig, first cast, WHAM!!! My improvisions are really good! I took some 20 cent crappy crappie jig and turned it into a $4 shad owner/killer/pwner! Good bye to those other jigs! I ended up with 6 fish in the freezer. Just an Idea, you can try my jiggish ideas. Just cut off the tail hairs and there you go!

heck yeah, cheap is best! What #test line are you using? I hardly ever get broken off by shad.

I havent seen or heard of a single shad caught in the clackamas all year so far.

It's almost over but not quite, still some being caught in the willamette..
