How far up river do they go? I get the impression they like to hang out in fast water. True?

In the western states freshwater lakes/reservoirs i've fished over the years ,many times fish & game dept has stocked them with Shad as a baitfish/fish food source. Bass, etc love em. Some lakes don't have a very large crawdad population so shad are used. Sometimes you will see the water boiling where a school of shad are active.......................
![]() ![]() ![]() Perch, Bluegill, Black or White crappie, Red Ear Perch, etc are also stocked in some waterways.................

the shad that get stocked in lakes are threadfin shad or gizzard shad. these fish are freshwater or brackish water fish and do not migrate to the ocean. they are stocked from san diego to florida across the southern states and as far north as shasta lake, or more. they cannot survive cold winters like we have here and there are often fishkills in the south during cold snaps.

We're getting closer to when they are running. when you find the right anchor line it's non stop.
It takes as long to get the stink of shad out of your fishbox as it does to fill it up with them, I'd never eat them but it seems some people do and love it. Pickled I hear. I think I'll stick to using it for bait. |
