Big Grin I got a new rod!

Ok, I now have a steelhead/salmon rod. Where do I go? I was thinking of getting a room on the coast so that I could be up early a.m. to go fish there. But where??? I thought of the Riverview Lodge in Nestucca. Any other thoughts?

You can catch salmon on 12 lb. test, that's all I used for years! You just have to set your drag lighter and let them run if they want. Bank fishing for them with lighter line is a kick!!! I caught a 50+ pounder on 12 lb. test and a 6 ft. medium action one piece Fenwick rod with a Mitchel 300 reel. I had to chase it up and down stream for close to and hour, but I did finally land it. It was quite the rush. I fish almost always from my boat now and I do use heavier gear when trolling, I guess I just don't have the patience I had in my earlier years. Give it a try, you might find it's a lot more fun than just horsing them in!

I caught a sturgeon at Bradford Island that was 55'' with 12lb line while fishing for squawfish bounties. I noticed that all the sturgeon fishermen were catching squaws on their sturgeon bait, so I just rigged up a smaller piece of shad and next thing I know, I'm battling for the next twenty or so minutes. He did break off one of the guides on my pole, busted the weld.

Sturgeon are the biggest rush of anything I've ever fished for. I'm new to fishing for them as of this year, and haven't yet caught a keeper but, have had a couple of peelers on. WOW talk about exciting. I've caught some big salmon in my life but never had a fish on that has so much power as a sturgeon!

Default Trask

Well we went to Tillamook, and fished the 'hostpital hole' from the bank. We saw about 8 Chinook pulled in throughout the day, 20# plus. It was so cool to see! I will defiantely be back there! Thanks for the encouragement, I'm glad I don't need a bigger rod

I use 30# at Lake Creek because the bedrock can saw your line up and the Chinook have some razor sharp teeth that will bite through the line. Plus their vision is getting worse due to old age.. I think I will go lighter for most places because after hearing Osprey there with the 12# that sounds like a hoot!

One thing to keep in mind if your fishing in popular spots I'm sure people will not take very kindly to you running all over the bank after your fish.
