Default Northeast fishing

I finally got out of my fishing slump, and took an opportunity to go on a vacation to the town of Joseph. For those of you that have not seen this part of Oregon, I assure you it is worth the trip. I started my week by getting up each day at 4AM, so that I would have Wallowa Lake to myself. The lake is a beautiful clear blue/green, and I had little difficulty limiting out, despite the fact that I am only a bank fisherman. On most of the afternoons I would drive to the Lostine River, which is as clear as glass, even at some pool depths of 6 feet. I caught several fish in the river, which I believe were Brook Trout. I had one enormous fish in my sights as I was wet wading upstream. I threw everything in my arsenal at it, including flies, spinners, spoons and bait, but nothing raised its attention. If only I had a net with me!

In summary, I highly recommend the long drive through amazing scenery to visit this part of our great State. The vacation has rekindled my passion for fishing imeasureably.

Thumbs up Eastern Oregon

I have all ways wanted to try my luck in that region....just never had the oppertunity to do so. Good on you for making it happen, I just can't seem to make it past Central Oregon, with all the fish able water between me and north eastern Oregon I would need to win the lottery to actually make it there. Congratulations on your success

Chuck

Right-On EJ. I've always wanted to fish Wallowa lake. I've heard the fishing there is fantastic. I've been over in that vacinity on several occations but was always there for different reasons not for fishing. One of these days I'll have to give it a try! Good Job!!!

Ej, you really didn't need to get up early to fish Wallowa lake, I spend each summer there and will retire to my home on the Lostine river next Sept. The lake gets very little pressure. That big fish on the Lostine was either a resident Bull Trout, "Dolly Varden," or an early Chinook Salmon. There is a small Chinook run that starts in Aug. If you get there in late August check under the bridge that crosses the Wallowa river entering into the state park at the south end of the lake and look for all of the red Kokanee heading up stream. Did you see any of the huge mule deer in the state park laying next to the RV's. It truly is Gods country. Glad you enjoyed it. Next time you are in the area go north out of Joseph about 30 miles and try fishing the Imnaha river, a nice little trout river. Later.

I made a second trip to Wallowa Lake this weekend with my wife and two of my children. We had planned to tent camp at the State Park, but the weather did not cooperate (25-30 degrees with snow on the ground), so we stayed at a friend's place in town. The lake was beautifully calm on the first morning I went out, and I managed to catch this small 9" trout on a KastMaster. Other than that I had no luck, but did have the opportunity to watch the rising Sun hit the mountains. The photos below aren't great, being taken on my cell phone camera, but I hope they give you a little idea of the beauty of this place.

On the second morning a storm front was approaching, and the wind was so strong it would blow my casts right back into my face. I gave up shortly, and returned home. I did have the opportunity to see thousands of red Kokanee swimming up the river from the lake to spawn, which was an interesting sight. I look forward to many returns to this great spot.
