Default Draw down at fall creek

Had the day off with my wife. Thought we would try fall creek. Put my daughter on the bus at 7a.m. and we were on the road. Cooler full of good stuff for lunch so we could make a day of it. Went to the far end where the creek runs under the bridge. I was thinking that might be good with cool water coming in and fish would be lurking for morsels caried into the lake by the stream. Tried power bait, crawlers and a few spinners. My wife had one fish snap at her crawler right at the shore. No luck after trying 3-4 spots. Decided to try the stream below the dam. WOW! what a beautiful stream. Smelled like steelhead. Lookes like it probably gets heavy pressure when the fish are runnin. No luck again. However, we were glad to discover this sweet streach of water.
Back up plan #3. Headed over below the dam at dexter. The boat ramp that's below the dam a mile or so was our starting point. About 1 p.m. not exactly great time of day for the bite. Heidi hooked up first, thank god, nice Rainbow about 11" on a crawler bouncing the bottom. Finally! No pressure now we got one. Waded in our tennis shoes to fish two more nice slots. We landed four each kept three released five small one kept three over 11". We won't keep anymore they did not taste to good. Heidi really got the hang of bouncing the bottom. She was a little frustrated about losing some gear but she tied all her own rigs and did great. Quality time on the river with my wife. Hard to beat. Ok if I would have packed a cold beer to celebrate at the end of the day ah. Home by 3p.m. in time for my 8yr old to come home from school. It was a great day. I can't wait for my wife to try steelly fishin now that she has some practice finding the magic bounce. Not to deep not to shallow. If anyone can tell me when to fish these spots for steelhead and salmon I would really appreiciate it.

All you need to do for steelhead is upsize the gear just a hair. You can fight 'em on trout gear if you finesse 'em. Keep drift fishing nightcrawlers, as everything likes worms, especially the Steel, and if you rig it like a bass grub, or curl tail worm ting, you get the ultimate presentation. Toss a worm in te river and see how it drifts, not wadded, but stringy, and sorta straight. On your bottom bounce, try to keep the bounce to a minimum, like 4 or so knocks on the bottom during your SaLmon/Steel drifts. Congrats on the fish, and hope you can find some Steel this winter, if I knew the area better I could help, but I only fish down there a few times a year.

Post Elisua Bristow

Elisua Bristow state Park is a great stretch of water, I have picked up quite a few nice Trout and Steelhead out of there on more than one occasion. Up hwy. 58 just past Rattle Snake road look for the sign, turn left and then right at the first intersection...just follow the signs to the park entrance, it is a fee area (USFS). Once your in the park follow the road to the furthest end and park by the restrooms; put your gear on and head north until you find the horse trail and follow it to the river...from there head up stream following the trail and fish, fish, and fish. There are quite a few holes along that stretch, after you round the bend there is one really great Salmon hole..large swirl hole in particular...you can't miss it. The trail goes on for ever it seems, just remember you have to walk back as far as you go....have a great day, maybe we will meet up there, it is my go to spot this time of year. Tight lines.
