Default Davis Lake's Fly Fishing Only

Just out of curiousity I was looking in the '07 regulations, and Davis lake is a fly fishing only lake. If you look at the regs for that it says only fly poles, and reels must be used, and no metal core lines. I PM'd Troutski about this. To see if he knows if the lake will be open for any fishing types for this special day. Monday I'm going to call the ODFW office in Corvallis and check on it. I would really like to participate in this event, but I'm not a fly fisherman, and have no fly fishing gear. I'll let you all know what I find out!

It is my understanding that the lake will remain "Fly Angling" only during the Bass roundup. I my self have a few fly rods and reels along with line for use during the roundup. If all you need is a fly rod and reel to participate between my self and others we can fill the gap. More information will be available as the date gets closer.

Default Some more info

A little Background on the lake for you all. Davis Lake has been a fly fishing only lake for around 70 years. Its native inhabitants are Redband Rainbow Trout, Mountain WhiteFish, and Bull Trout. In the mid 1990's it was confirmed by ODFW that there was a small population of LMB in the lake. This population exploded in the late 1990's and here we are today. There is also some Brown Bullhead Catfish in the lake also, population unknown as it was found while electroshocking this last year at the Bass Bash. Also present is some remnants of Tui Chub although the Bass have pretty well cleared them out. Brook trout is also in the system although it is not clear whether or not they actually inhibit the lake itself.
ODFW's current management plan for Davis is to manage it as a Trophy Redband Trout fishery and to save and reestablish the Bull trout population.
ODFW does not actively manage the Bass population, hence the reason why there is no limit on size or number kept.
Don't quote me on this but i believe that they said the estimated population was over 8,000 Bass over 15" in length, but this is a very broad number as they really don't have a good feel for it.
To help come up with a plan to deal with the bass in the lake so the redbands and bulls can hopefully flourish ODFW still needs our help in getting a better population estimate and other data from the lake.
Thats where we came in last year and had the "Bass Bash".
Well,.....ODFW is asking for our help to step up to the plate once again.
In conjunction with Central Oregon FlyFishers, Fly Fishing Federation, and probably more organizations ODFW wants to give it another shot.
There will be another meeting, probably at the end of the month to hammer out some details but this will probably happen in early May.

More info when available .....

Default Tentative date set for round up

I talked to the ODFW this morning and the tentative dates for the Bass Round up is May 12-13, now this may cause some a shortage in anglers due the fact that it is the mothers day weekend. So, their might be a change in dates. When I receive more information I will post.

Fly fishing only huh? Does that limit you to flycasting only as well? Or could you longline poppers and streamers from the boat via a fly rod?

You can troll, as long as you are using a fly rod and a fly reel and fly line and a legal fly. No spinning or level winds...............It will still be a gas. Huge Bass, and very big Rainbows. How can you miss.
