Default You smell that? Thats skunk.

After being sick for the last week (Ischemic Colitis) the ol' forearm was itchin like crazy and all I could see when I closed my eyes were silver flashes 7 ft under....So I woke up this morning, got coffee, and proceeded directly to Riverside Park. Before I got my line in the water there were 3 large splashes and 2 small. ....tossed a #4 Blue Fox orange body silver blade for about 25 casts, all the while fish jumpin everywhere around me. Switched to #3 B.F. Chart. silvr blade, 20 throws, tried a few more spinners, nothin..........Swit ch to driftin hot pink worm at all different depths, nuthin.........Aha!! Try the jig!....Zippo.
Nice day on the river, I just came home with this horrid stench.

No worries, about the skunk, they might have been steelhead, and if they were, they are probably outgoing silver pencils...I have seen quite a few of those at Riverside lately. Steelhead are harder to get bonked than other species, so don't feel too bad, I skunk out all the time there, minus the crappy Pikeminnow... No Coho there yet, but soon enough they will start to shimmy their way through the gauntlet. Be ready for that.

Wink 50 mile stench.......

Oh,Child...it's not just you. It smells the same way at my house tonight, too. The Santiam at Jefferson wasn't any nicer. It's a good thing we are determined as well as addicted, huh? We'll both give 'em hell next time!

NO WAY! That most surely was not a 'Bow, it ws smolt of some sort, either Chinook, or Coho maybe, maybe Steelhead smolt too, which really are not Rainbows to begin with after this many rounds of hatchery breeding. If you are catching small bright fish there, they are smolt, and I'm glad you let it go, hopefully without too much trauma. No Rainbow Trout population that low, but up at Faraday Lake, and North Fork Res. there is really good trout fishing...

That swhat I was thinkin... no trout down there no way... steelhead and trout do look very alike when it comes to small sizes and smolt.

Steelhead are rainbow trout that ended up traveling, and spending a duration in the ocean. In some place they do let rainbow trout into rivers and they hang around for a year or two, then migrate, but the ones on the Clack are gene diluted Steelhead clones from a hatchery. They do not look like a real rainbow trout, they tend to be a bit brighter.
