Sounds like your setup will work. Drift fishing bait is a good way to go.
I personally use #6-#15 lb maxima UG or sufix siege (depending on water conditions) as leader and #30 tuf line for my mainline on the drift fishing rods. I'd save 3/0's for trolling herring at B10, ect. I use 1/0's at the largest - and usually use #1's and #2's for drift fishing. Not saying you can't use them with potential success, just that they are a bit large and heavy. smaller, lighter wire hooks are better for driftfishing. It's a balancing game between heavy enough to get down to the fish's level, but not heavy enough to just "dredge the bottom". also: The less lead you use drift fishing, and sidedrifting, the more fish you'll catch. A "natural" smooth flowing presentation is in many cases - imperative. You still want to be fishing the bottom two feet of the river, and maintaining occasional contact with the bottom - but you don't want to be dragging split shot across the bottom as that obviously takes the "natural" look away from your bait. |
