Default Stingray Hydrofoil

I have a very light and very wide aluminum boat (17' Smokercraft osprey with a 91" beam at 1250lbs)

my 75hp 4-stroke mercury does well getting it to plane, but my bow points so far towards the sky I can't see out the front even while standing at my console. I was thinking about buying a hydrofoil and sting-ray makes a product that I don't have to drill holes into my lower unit (heh) to install.

Anybody have one of these? They advertise a quicker hole-shot which makes sense, but I've heard decreased top speed, and at the moment I can get it up to about 38-40 on a good day with just me and about a half tank of fuel.

any input?

Default Hydrofoil

Hydrofoils are one of those things that you either love or hate, anything you add to your boat or motor is going to have some sort of drawback. Myself I love them; I personally feel that the factory should incorporate some sort of hydrofoil into there design. I have had three motors and three hydrofoils, the speed you loose on the top end won't matter after you learn how to get the most out of your powertrim/tilt; I would be more surprised if you didn't get a little more top end. One thing about a hydrofoil I should point out is; during high speed turns take it easy until you get the feel of your new boat It is like having power stearing on you boat. I have the mounted model that you must drill holes in the lower unit. I have a 15' SmokerCraft with a 25hp 4-stroke Merc. and I can by myself with a nicely equipped boat get on plane in the length of my boat. That alone makes the thing worth it, in my opinion.
These threads can get a little sticky at times, its like fuel stableisers I avoid them but other people live by them, we all have opinions; thats the good thing about this forum - tolerance
Hope I helped...

Chuck

Call Troy at Steven's Marine in Milwaukie. (503) 652-1444. He's the service manager and can tell you specifically what would be best for your boat since they are a Smoker/Sylvan dealer and Mercury dealer.
