I have fished Benson lake in the gorge many times over many years and have done well from the north-east end plunking pautski's and worms.

The biggest crappie I have ever seen came out of there. The darn thing looked like a dinner plate with a mouth and fins.

Peace, Tom

Ahhhh, sounds like fun! I'll have to keep that in mind. Wonder if it's open this time of the year. Is this Benson Lake within a park? Will I have to pay some sort of park fee?

Yes you have to pay an Oregon State Park day use fee. Hope it's still $3.
Don't be afraid to try the lake you pass on the way into Benson- they put lots of trout in there too. It's called Hartman Pond now. You could drive in from the backside on the old gorge hiway- get off of I-84 at Corbett or the next exit(Bridal Veil Falls maybe?) and you can park free next to the railroad tracks to fish Hartman. And you could go a little further east to the Multnomah Falls parking lot which is free and then walk back along the RR tracks to fish Benson for free. Watch out for the trains- some of them really HAUL A** through there.

Default Been there....

There is a trout pond in he same lot as Benson also, I found out they stock both on the odfw site, the maps are posted on Oregon Fish Finderalong with stocking dates. I usually go the Tuesday after a pond or lake is stocked and max out within about an hour and a half.

How fun is that! Bet you can catch a plethora of other fish in the flooded areas.

Default I needed my own show

Yeah I went hiking up this stream that was running from the flooded area down to hartman I think. I didn't make it all the way but I was climbing over trees and other stuff trying to find some fish. I need a camera so I could have my own show on espn. Okay maybe not but it was a blast.... I didn't catch anything in that part of the stream but it was still a blast.

Default Benson Lake by Multnomah Falls

If that is the lake you are talking about it is great in the early season but the algee on the bottom gets really thick making it hard to fish from the bank. If you dont have a raft or float tube then you want to park over at the Multnomah Falls area, cross I 84 and fish from that side. You will see when you get there where everyone fishes because unfortunatly people are pigs and dont pick up thier litter. Anyway, use red powerbait, long leader with enough weight to keep you on the bottom..its the only chance not the get tied up in the weeds. I always catch fish here....all planters however but none the less..FISH ON!!
