Default Minto-Brown is heating up

Caught these on monday near the bridge that crosses the slough. The first one I caught was the little 1 pounder, then found the second one by accident when I had to lay my pole down to take a call. She picked the worm up and moved it off her bed, it took about 40min to finally get her agitated enough to really bite it. She was a little more than 5lbs.

Good show! Minto is just a few miles from my house.

Are you talking about the bridge off the back parking lot that's behind the playground? I did some bait and spincasting back there last week and didn't have much luck....

I'm going to start backpacking my gear through there via my mountain bike and see if I can find some additional good spots. That pond by the entrance seems too obvious and probably fished out.

Thanks, the bottom pic is the 5lb fish according to my little scale.
That is the bridge about an eighth mile past the playground. There are quite a few fish around there, just have to work the bank real hard with a super slow retrieve.

i need help with bass fishing also. Im usually just a trout/catfish/shad guy and want to get started into bass. Can you give us some hints? I went to walling and the bass just teased me because i could see them and they wouldn't bite.

The key to fishing the spawn in my opinion is to use a super slow retrieve. If you are sight fishing along the bank you need to stay at least 5ft back from where you have spotted the bass, they will spook from their nest if you get too close. I generally use either a finesse, or senko worm in a color that matches the water color, for minto that could be either green pumpkin or a watermelon color. I will usually texas rig my worm with a 1/0 offset worm hook and just work it off the bottom, I move it a couple of inches then let it sit for around five seconds then move again. You have to get the bass irritated at the worm for them to strike, and even then you have to be patient because they will quickly pick the worm(or other lure) and spit it out away from their nest, just be patient and you should catch it sooner or later. If they stop hitting your lure go fish somewhere else for a bit and come back later. From what I have read most spawn sites are around 3-5ft in size and within that 3-5ft there is a sweet spot where the bass will lay the eggs, that is really where you want to be fishing to be successful.
Hope this helps out some.

Eric
