Default I'm an idiot basser

Ok I'll fess up... It's taken me about 3 days to come to terms with this. I hooked about a nine pounder (at least, and I'm not kidding) in Olalla sight fishing a Senko on, get this, 6# test, in 2 feet of water around all kinds of logs and limbs sticking out of the water. What a stupid thing to do Well needless to say, she swam out of her nest about 20 yards out straight to left. Obviously I couldn't change her path and she turned in and went right under a log and broke me off... To top it all off there were two other boats about 30 yards away from me watching and I started the whole Bass Show Host commentary
"Oh yeah! Oh Hell yeah! Oh Hell yeah! Come on baby! Oh ye--No don't go there! No! No! Not there.. gaaarrgggfffpsh!" (indescribable word). I was so wrecked one of the other boaters felt he needed to console me.
"I know how ya feel buddy. I've been there too man. That hurts."
The other boat just quietly rowed away...
So there she is just sitting there and I row right up and there is my Senko hanging out of her mouth. I felt terrible. I HATE breaking off big baits and leaving them in fish, and I can't believe that I would spot a fish that big and think that I could fight her in timber with a 6 pound spinner... Sigh. They call that a brain fart.
And I mean she was big... A 6'' Senko in the corner of her mouth and the end barely made it past her gill.

dont mean to questoin you. just scares me as an angler to see people use 4 lb test in that situation. fish are starting to get on beds. if people throw on there with light line and break one off, it most likely will kill the fish or prevent it from spawning with a hook and line in it's mouth.

4lb test is ok in the winter in the open water in my opinion. but with water heating up, fish will fight harder, and more weeds will be in with that warm sun, so be careful when using light line. i know it is fun to do on light tackle. but most light rigs can easily hold 6 lb or 8lb test. just loosen the drag and use on a light rod. just my 2 cents. u get to use what line you want and have reasons for it. congrats on the fish though, and yes i agree P-LINE IS GREAT STUFF!!!!!

i warned you guys

The only thing that makes me feel better is that I checked the nest and the eggs were already there so....
Also, I'm pretty sure she broke me off at the knot so at least she isn't trailing line.
I pulled out my second spool and put on 10#. Now I have that spool for a backup and the 6# for crappie.

Wow! That is a tough battle to lose no matter what gear you are using. My Mom always told me "mistakes were made to turn into lessons" and this is a great example. You proved to be a quick learner and no one can chew your hiney out better than you can. Get a bigger, better one next time.

If the safety of the fish was really an issue then we should not be fishing with any test line. Sure, light line vs big fish is not the best way to catch them but it's quite fun too - I ultralight fish all the time and personally don't feel I'm a bad fisherman and am endagering fish.

Default Light line

I took everyone's words to heart and did buy all new line...actually just put different line on my extra spools so I could make quick changes. I switched all my bass line to brade 15-25 lb test. With clear water I had a 15 lb fluorocarbon leader. No one wants to loose a big fish or intentionally cause harm to the fish...unless you plan on clubbing him for dinner. Live and learn I guess

Are you talking about the lake owned by GP paper mill? Right outside of Toledo?

Problem is some of the bigguns are smarter than the average joe and won't strike if they spot the line. I don't know this for sure but it makes sense and I find that when I use lighter line I get more hits from bigger fish. I don't use ultralight or light in weeds and what not or when other cover is right nearby - depends on the water and what cover (if any) the fish have nearby.

thats why they made flurocarbon...you can get away with 12-17lb test or throw it on a leader with 30-50lb braid. You can fish with any line you want to, but i feel when bed fishing, it is a critical time for the fish, and if you chose to do it, make sure u wet ur knots and use good line. If it truly was a "9lb bass" then it genes are critical to the fishery.

Yeah that's the lake. You can only fish until 9:00 and then they close it up.

I really don't like messing with bass when they are spawning but I couldn't help myself. I'm sure it was 9 pounds, probably more I know of a guy that has a 9 pound bass on his wall and I followed this one around for 15 minutes and at times was 2 feet away from it. I was a huge fish. That's why I felt so bad . Never again...
