Chuck,
After doing the bass thing for over 25 years and trying out alot of baitcasters over the years, I have become very cautious about lesser brands like Cabelas, BPS, Shakespeare, and so on. If the reel is only $50 or $75, there is probably a good reason for it (quality?). There really are no bargains in baitcasters and any reel under $100 is not meant for or capable of serious bass fishing.

I prefer Shimanos, Quantums, and some Diawas (but be careful with Daiwa, they can produce some quality reels, but they also churn out alot of KMart stuff, too.) I purchased my first Shimano (Black Magnum 100) in 1987 for $79.95. I was using it today. That's my impression of Shimano.

Funny, all my spinning reels are Shimano's and I have never regretted a single purchase. Thanks for the great advice....you probably saved me close to 50 to 65 dollars...that means I can raise the price I was set on spending and get a very nice reel...I am sure my wife will thank you...

cavdad,

i agree with a lot of what u say. You do get what you pay for. Nothing can beat a good shimano or abu ... however, i feel that BPS and Cabelas make some good reels. Well, cabelas is worthwhile and is a good price, but i feel only with their prodigy. Casts and retrieves great, drag is acceptable, and the bearings are great, designed and made by dawai. The Johhny Morrison by BPS are also good, but at their price i would get a shimano. I got last years prodigy's from cabelas for 65$ on closeout sale. So glad i bought them. Amazing. But like cavdad said, you get what you pay for, and be careful as you search for casters. The one thing super about shimano/abu/and daiwa, are their great customer service!

my 2 cents!

Default Quality Baitcasters

You will be hard pressed to beat these reels for quality, features, and price. Bass Pro Shops Extreme Baitcast Reels
I've had 2 of these for several years, and headed for the 3rd because of the 7 gear ratio. On sale for $59, you're not going to beat them !

Default Pinnacle

I bought a pinnacle reel, and its really nice! i paid like 60 bucks for it at wally world. i'm impressed with it so far. and it has yet to let me down....

the magnetic cast assist works great also! i have yet to birds nest it and have to cut the line! which is surprising for an amatuer bait caster......

I hate to admit this, but I like using a spin caster for some Bass fishing. They are easy! I have bait casters as well some cheap ones, but they do the trick. Practice to the point where you don't worry about backlashing, before you got out with one. It is real frustrating to have to fix a backlash if you are casting over and over again.

Default Spinning....

Looks like I am going with a spinning reel for my Bass set up, after countless back lashes and far to much dark language I have decided that sometimes you can't teach an old dog new tricks; so I picked up a decent med sized spinning reel with a spare spool. I have a couple of questions about the rod and line. I will be using braided line (Fireline) and was wondering if a med action 7 foot Spinning rod would be a good general carry in the boat all purpose rod ? I was considering 12-14 lb test line, 14 lb main line and a 12 lb leader (24 in. Flor/mono) for just a hit of stretch. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated ...

Chuck

what kind of baitcaster where you using? were u using it with someone who is comfortable with baitcasters? you might not of had the tension bar or breaking systems used correctly. it is commonly forgotten about when people first start using them.

as for your set up, there is no such thing as an all purpose rod. your rod wont throw swimbaits for flip heavey jigs. however, it will be able to do plenty of things for bass. throwing small cranks/blades, and soft plastics wont be a problem on a 7ft med. so good luck with ur new set up!

I have a ABU Garcia Record reel that I use for Sturgeon, Salmon and trolling for what ever. When I've casted it I've never had a birds nest...it's and awesome reel..but it wasn't cheap either, $140! But I think it was well worth the price!
